Description

Experience the perfect blend of history, nature, and hospitality in the heart of Istria!

Surrounded by ancient forests and situated on a hilly plateau, Sveti Petar u Šumi is one of the most unusual Istrian settlements. Unlike other Istrian towns and villages that developed on hilltops, this village was originally built without houses around the church or monastery— all to preserve the peace and tranquility of the Benedictine monks. Today, this unique place offers a peaceful retreat, where guests are welcomed with a serene atmosphere and the warmth of true Istrian hospitality.

One of the most remarkable sights here is the monastery cloister, which will surprise you with its distinctive architecture. At its center stands a well, while columns and arches gracefully line both the ground floor and the first floor. When the Pauline friars took over the monastery, they renovated the cloister by installing new columns on the ground floor and moving the older ones to the upper level, creating a fascinating architectural blend.

The history of this place dates back centuries—Emperor Frederick II granted the abandoned Benedictine abbey in Sveti Petar u Šumi to the Paulines in 1459. The Paulines established a monastery here, along with a novitiate and an elementary school for children from all over Istria. In terms of size, this monastery was second only to the famous Pauline monastery in Lepoglava. Although it was abolished in 1786, the Paulines returned in 1993, reviving the traditions and spiritual life of the area.

Today, Sveti Petar u Šumi is a place where history, tranquility, and authentic Istrian hospitality come together. Whether you want to explore its rich cultural heritage, enjoy the beauty of nature, or simply find a peaceful retreat, you will be welcomed with warmth and an unforgettable stay.
